Pet Food Recalls
BREEDERS CHOICE RECALL
Breeder’s Choice, a Central Garden & Pet company, has issued a voluntary recall April 16, 2013, for a single batch of Active Care Biscuits-Healthy Dog Treats due to mold discovered in one of the lots of dog biscuits.

The following product is included in the recall:
Product Code/SKU/ Material #: BCP-080
UPC Code: 0130104895
Size: 24 oz.
Product Name: Active Care Biscuits-Healthy Dog Treats
Best Before Code: 19/Dec/2013
Product and product lots that do not appear above have not been affected.
According to a release from the manufacturer, the mold seems to have occurred due to varying dryer temperature settings for drying biscuits. This exposed the recalled product to excess moisture and has since been remedied.
Pet owners who fed their pets the recalled biscuits should watch for symptoms that may develop. Common symptoms associated with mold exposure include gastrointestinal issues such as loose stool. At the time of this release, there have been no reports of human or pet illnesses associated with this recall.
For more information, call the Central Customer Care line at (866) 500-6286 or visit goactivedog.com.

• 5 lb. Bravo! Chicken Balance frozen raw diet chubs (tubes) with “best used by” dates of 3_6_15 and 3_12_15 imprinted on the side of the plastic casing. Only 26 cases with the 3_6_15 date were distributed nationally and 36 cases with 3_12_15 date were distributed nationally.
• 2 lb. Bravo! Chicken Blend frozen raw diet chubs (tubes) with the “best used by” date of 3_21_15 imprinted on the side of the plastic casing. Only 67 cases with 3_21_15 date were distributed nationally.

The product that tested positive has been 100 percent contained and is not subject to this recall. No other products or sizes are affected. The company has received no reports of illness in either people or animals associated with these products.
While these products tested negative, Bravo! is allowing concerned pet owners to return unopened frozen tubes of food and patties to the store where purchased for a full refund. Pet owners should dispose of unopened product in a safe manner (example, a securely covered trash receptacle). Consumers who believe they have opened these products at home should just dispose of the product in a safe manner and contact the retailer where they purchased their product for a full refund.
For more information on the Bravo recall, please visit www.bravorawdiet.com, or call toll free (866) 922-9222 Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (EST).

NATURA PET
Dear Valued Customer,
Natura Pet is expanding the recall of specific California Natural, Innova, EVO, Karma and Healthwise formulas as a precautionary measure due to potential Salmonella contamination. Mother Nature and wet products are not included in this recall. No other P&G Pet Care brands are impacted by this recall.
We were alerted to a single case of Salmonella in a 2.2lb package of EVO Turkey & Chicken Cat Food on March 15th and took the precautionary measure of recalling all products produced on the same line within the same time frame. In the course of further examination, Salmonella was also discovered in other packages of EVO Turkey & Chicken Cat Food and Innova Cat Treats. We are taking the immediate and precautionary action of expanding the current recall to include additional Natura products that were produced between December 14th 2012 and March 24th, 2013 on the same production line. We are also recalling a single lot of Innova Cat treats. True to our heritage, we will be transparent as we work through this issue.
Plans are in place to increase production and expedite release of product, but some supply disruptions should be expected.
Salmonella and other contaminants pose a great challenge to the food industry. No company is immune. We assure you that we are extensively investigating, inspecting and taking all actions necessary to ensure that our products meet both your customer’s expectations and ours.
If additional risks are identified, we will take immediate action to protect the health of our pets and integrity of our products. We are committed to doing what is necessary to make the healthiest pet foods in the world.
The attached document lists impacted SKUs with specific lot codes and expiration dates for both the previously announced voluntary recall and this expansion.
What to do if you have this product in your store or warehouse:
Managers or designee should immediately secure all affected SKUs to an isolated location. Product should be secured/segregated from saleable product.
Distributor partners, please notify your retail outlets and ensure they take the appropriate action to remove the impacted products from the shelf.
Your Natura Sales Representative and/or distributor will be in contact with further instructions.
If you need additional information please call 800.224.6123. We apologize for any inconvenience this situation may cause, and want to assure you that Natura Pet is taking all the necessary steps to ensure our productquality meets your expectations.

NATURA’S BIG PETFOOD RECALL (For Innova, California Natural, Evo & Healthwise brands).
March 18, 2013 the FDA posted: Natura Pet Products is voluntarily recalling specific lots of dry pet food because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. No Salmonella-related illnesses have been reported.
Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.
Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.
Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
These products were made in a single production facility during a two week window in December 2012. Routine testing by the Michigan Department of Agriculture collected from a single retail location tested positive for the presence of Salmonella. As a precautionary measure, Natura is voluntarily recalling all products from this production window.
The affected products are sold in bags through veterinary clinics, select pet specialty retailers, and online in the United States, Canada, Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Costa Rica. Product expiration dates range from 12/17/2013 – 1/2/2014. Product was distributed by Natura Pet Products between December 18, 2012 through March 15, 2013. No other dry food, canned food, biscuits, bars or treats are affected by this announcement.
A complete list of products in the scope of this recall are listed at the end of this release. Additional information on these products can be found at
1www.naturapet.com2.
Consumers who have purchased the specific dry pet foods listed should discard them.
For further information or a product replacement or refund call Natura toll-free at 800-224-6123. (Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM CST).

The Honest Kitchen regularly tests for Salmonella and other pathogens as part of its quality control process and has not received to date any reports of illness associated with these lots of products. Nonetheless, the Company is proceeding with this action in order to ensure the full safety and quality of its products.
“We are committed to providing the highest-quality human-grade food available to our customers’
pets,” said Lucy Postins, founder, CEO and CMO of The Honest Kitchen. “While our quality control tests did not find evidence of Salmonella in any of our finished products, we are accountable for everything we make, and are taking precautionary action to ensure the safety and integrity of our products.”

Kasel Associates Industries Recalling Certain Pet Treats Due to Salmonella Contamination Boots and Barkley, Colorado Naturals, Nature’s Deli among brands affected
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – February 21, 2013 – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced today that Kasel Associates Industries Inc. is recalling all pet treats it manufactured from April 20 through Sept. 19, 2012 due to potential contamination with Salmonella. Kasel has issued three previous recall notices for specific products manufactured during this time period.
The move comes after the Colorado Department of Agriculture tested a retail sample of a Kasel pet treat product and found it to be positive for Salmonella. Based on FDA’s follow-up inspection at the firm, FDA found that all of the finished pet treat product samples and 48 out of 87 environmental samples collected during the inspection tested positive for Salmonella. More than ten different species of Salmonella were found in the firm’s products and manufacturing facility, indicating multiple sources of contamination.
While there are no reports of human illness, FDA has received a small number of complaints of illness in dogs who were exposed to the treats. Because of the multiple positive tests for Salmonella, and the production practices and conditions observed at the facility during the inspection, FDA believes that there is a reasonable probability that pet treat products manufactured in the facility from April 20, 2012 through September 19, 2012 are contaminated with Salmonella.
Both people and animals can contract Salmonellosis from handling or eating contaminated products. People handling dry pet treats should thoroughly wash their hands after having contact with the treats as well as any surfaces exposed to these products.
Consumers who have any of these products, or who are unsure of the manufacturing date of their pet treats, should dispose of them in ways that people and animals, including wild animals, cannot access them, such as placing them in a securely lidded garbage can.
The Kasel-manufactured products are sold at various retailers, including Target, Petco, Sam’s Club and Costco. Most of the products have a two-year shelf life.
All of the products were made in the U.S. This action is not related to FDA’s ongoing investigation of jerky pet treats made in China.
Salmonella is a public health risk and is one of the most common causes of foodborne illness. Healthy people infected with Salmonella may experience some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Although rare, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart), arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with the products subject to this recall should contact their health care provider immediately.
Pets with Salmonella infections may become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets may experience only a decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected, but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed any of the affected product or is experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately.
The elderly, infants and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to become severely ill from Salmonella infection. The bacterium can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in these vulnerable populations. Most healthy individuals recover from Salmonella infections within four to seven days without treatment.
As with humans, dogs who are elderly, very young or have impaired immune systems are more vulnerable to Salmonella infection.

SECAUCUS, N.J., Jan. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Hartz Mountain Corporation is voluntarily withdrawing its Hartz ® Chicken Chews™ and Hartz ® Oinkies® Pig Skin Twists wrapped with Chicken for dogs in the United States because they contain trace amounts of unapproved antibiotic residue.

Waggin Train/Canyon Creek Jerky Treat Recall
From the Waggin Train website:
Nestlé Purina PetCare Company to voluntarily withdraw Waggin’ Train®
and Canyon Creek Ranch® brand dog treat products
St. Louis, Missouri, January 9, 2013 . . . Nestlé Purina PetCare Company and its wholly owned subsidiary Waggin’ Train, LLC today announced it is voluntarily withdrawing its Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch brand dog treats sold in the United States until further notice.
The Company is taking this action after learning this week that the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets (NYSDAM) found trace amounts of antibiotic residue in samples of Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch chicken jerky products. These antibiotics are approved for use in poultry in China and other major countries, including European Union member states, but are not among those approved in the U.S. Antibiotics are commonly used globally, including in the United States, when raising animals fit for human consumption. Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch products are safe to feed as directed. However, due to regulatory inconsistencies among countries, the presence of antibiotic residue is technically considered an adulteration in the United States. This finding does not pose a safety risk to pets.
New York State authorities initially requested that the Company remove Waggin’ Train and Canyon Creek Ranch chicken jerky treats from retail locations in the state of New York, which we have agreed to do. In addition, because of the differences in U.S. and Chinese regulations, Nestlé Purina decided to conduct a nationwide voluntary withdrawal.
“All of us at Waggin’ Train care deeply about pets and their owners, and the quality of our products is of the utmost importance,” said Nina Leigh Krueger, President, Waggin’ Train LLC. “Waggin’ Train has served millions of pets and their owners very well. In the final analysis, our Company and our loyal consumers must have total confidence in the products we sell and feed our pets. Once we understand and determine how to comply with the technicalities of different regulatory frameworks, we will work with all appropriate parties to define the best way to supply the market.”
Nestlé Purina contacted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding NYSDAM’s findings. There is no indication that the trace amounts of antibiotic residue are linked to the FDA’s ongoing investigation of chicken jerky products. The trace amounts of antibiotic residue (in the parts-per-billion range) do not pose a health or pet safety risk.
No other Purina treats or pet food products are affected by this withdrawal. In addition, Canyon Creek Ranch dog and cat foods, which are manufactured in the United States, are not included in this withdrawal.
For product refund or more information call our Office of Consumer Affairs at 1-800-982-0704 or go to www.waggintrainbrand.com

MILO’S KITCHEN® VOLUNTARILY RECALLS CHICKEN JERKY AND CHICKEN GRILLERS HOME-STYLE DOG TREATS
San Francisco – January 9, 2013 – Milo’s Kitchen® today announced that it is voluntarily recalling its Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers home-style dog treats from retailer shelves nationally. No other Milo’s Kitchen® products are affected.
On Monday, New York State’s Department of Agriculture informed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Company that trace amounts of residual antibiotics had been found in several lots of Milo’s Kitchen® Chicken Jerky. After consultation with the New York Department of Agriculture and FDA, the company decided to voluntarily recall Milo’s Kitchen® Chicken Jerky and Chicken Grillers, which are both sourced from the same chicken suppliers.
Consumers with questions about Milo’s Kitchen products can get further information at 1-877-228-6493.
In my opinion this finding of antibiotic residue is most probably not the cause of so many dogs becoming ill after eating these imported treats from China, but it is at least one way to get them off the market for dogs’ sake.

Billjack Dog Food Recall
The manufacturer's website has posted that: "We have requested that a select number of retailers withdraw one small batch (256 cases) of 6 LB Adult Select Formula Dog Food from their warehouses and stores. We have had a few reports of mold in bags from this batch that was caused by higher moisture content in the food. We know the entire batch has not been affected, but have requested the entire small batch to be removed from warehouses and stores. Only batch number 1792-02 (Expiration 27 DEC 13) is affected, all in only 6 LB bags."
Kirkland Signature Super Premium Cat Food
In late May 2012 this company posted recalls in some of its dry cat foods: Kirkland Signature Super Premium Maintenance Cat Chicken & Rice Formula and Kirkland Signature Super Premium Healthy Weight Cat Formula dry cat food. This expanded recall now includes pet food produced at a second Diamond plant located in Meta, Missouri. Contamination in Gaston involved Salmonella infantis, while the strain in Missouri was identified as a different strain, Salmonella Liverpool. This is one of the biggest recent pet food recalls and reflects poorly on the industry and the effectiveness of government (FDA) inspections, standards and enforcement because there have been surely enough pet food recalls over the past few years that this should never happen. Bu the inherent flaws in our food industry and in agricultural practices, especially the stressful, disease-promoting conditions under which farmed animals are raised, mean no amount of government (i.e. public funded) regulation and oversight is going to make any significant difference to ever prevent yet another massive pet food or human food recall, and pets and people getting ill. The system itself must be changed, as I have documented in my book Healing Animals & the Vision of One Health
(available on Amazon.com) and synopsived in my new article posted on my website: "Healing Agiculture".

Wellness® Canned Cat Food
Tewksbury, MA (February 28, 2011) - WellPet LLC announced today it has voluntarily recalled certain lots of Wellness® canned cat food. While recent laboratory testing found that most lots of Wellness canned cat food that were tested contain sufficient amounts of thiamine (also known as Vitamin B1), some of the lots listed below might contain less than adequate levels of thiamine. However, out of an abundance of caution, WellPet has decided to recall all of the lots listed below.
Cats fed only the affected lots for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine deficiency. Thiamine is essential for cats. Symptoms of deficiency displayed by an affected cat can be gastrointestinal or neurological in nature. Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting, and weight loss. In advanced cases, neurologic signs can develop, which may include ventriflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, wobbly walking, circling, falling, and seizures. If your cat has consumed the recalled lots and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible.
The lots involved in this voluntary recall are:
-
Wellness Canned Cat (all flavors and sizes) with best by dates from 14APR 13 through 30SEP13;
-
Wellness Canned Cat Chicken & Herring (all sizes) with 10NOV13 or 17NOV13 best buy dates.
Consumers who still have cans of cat food from these lots should stop feeding them to their cats and call us at (877) 227-9587 Monday through Friday, 9:00 am – 7:00 pm Eastern Time. Consumers with further questions should visit our website at www.wellnesspetfood.com or call us at this same number. WellPet discovered the lower thiamine levels during independent testing conducted together with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in response to a single, isolated consumer complaint received by the FDA. Although WellPet has received no other reports concerning thiamine in its products, WellPet has taken additional steps with the manufacturer to ensure that this does not happen again.

Contaminated Petfood Case Ends in Fine, Probation
A Nevada couple who imported more than 800 metric tons of wheat gluten from China which was contaminated deliberately with melamime and cyanuric acid and killed an estimated 1,950 cats and 2,200 dogs in the US were sentenced in Kansas City on February 05, 2010..
Stephen and Sally Miller of Las Vegas and their company, ChemNutra Inc., were fined $35,000. and placed on probation for three years and barred from importing pet food ingredients. Kansas City Star reporter Sara Shepherd writes:
"U.S. Magistrate Judge John T. Maughmer said he read a stack of letters, inches tall, from affected pet owners.Evidence doesn"t indicate that the Millers knowingly imported something they knew would kill animals, the judge said. But they did not exercise due diligence to ensure their product was safe, he said. "There was much loss, much heartbreak, much damage that was done as a consequence of this case … and you have to bear responsibility," Maughmer told the couple. In light of a $24 million settlement in a civil lawsuit related to the tainted food, the judge ordered no further restitution for pet owners".
More than 150 brands of pet food were involved in this biggest-to-date recall in 2007. For details, see my book Not Fit for a Dog: The Truth About Manufactured Cat and Dog Food

Nutro Products Recall
Out of an abundance of caution, on May 21, 2009, Nutro Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTRO® NATURAL CHOICE® COMPLETE CARE® Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO® MAX® Cat Dry Foods with "Best If Used By Dates" between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in our finished product resulting from aproduction error by a US-based premix supplier.
Two mineral premixes were affected. One premix contained excessive levels of zinc and under-supplemented potassium. The second premix under-supplemented potassium. Both zinc and potassium are essential nutrients for cats and are added as nutritional supplements to NUTRO® dry cat food. The company posted this statement:
"As soon as we became aware of the issue, we made the decision to hold shipments of affected dry cat product, and took immediate action to verify with our mineral premix supplier that no other products were affected. We then contacted the FDA to notify them of the voluntary recall. A full list of affected product and available alternatives for your clients is available at NutroProducts.com/
We have completed a comprehensive audit of premixes for all NUTRO® products, and have confirmed that this issue only affects certain dry cat food products. No other NUTRO® products are affected, including dry dog food, wet dog and cat foods and dog and cat treats.
Consumers who have purchased affected product should immediately discontinue feeding the product to their cats, and switch to another product with a balanced nutritional profile. While we have received no consumer complaints related to this issue, cat owners should monitor their cat for symptoms, including a reduction in appetite or refusal of food, weight loss, vomiting or diarrhea. We have suggested that cat owners contact their veterinarian if their cat is experiencing health issues or is pregnant.
Consumers who have purchased product affected by this voluntary recall should return it to their retailer for a full refund or exchange for another NUTRO® dry cat food product.
Affected product was distributed to retail customers in all 50 states,as well as to customers in Canada, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Israel. We are working with all of our distributors and retail customers, in both the US and internationally, to ensure that the recalled products are not on store shelves.

Wysong, Nutro, and Diamond Pet Foods
Wysong is the third pet food maker this fall to pull some of its products off the market, recalling five batches of Canine Diets Maintenance and Senior dry dog food -- manufactured in June and July 2009 -- because the products contain Penicillium and Fusarium mold. Wysong notified its distributors, the FDA also posted a recall notice on its Web site, < http://www.wysong.net/dry-dog-food.php >
In early October, 2009 Diamond Pet Foods removed some of its Premium Edge Finicky Adult and Hairball cat food off the market because of deficiencies in thiamine levels. < http://www.premiumedgepetfood.com/promotions/66/ >
Nutro Products recalled three types of its puppy food because of a production error. < http://www.nutroproducts.com/ >
According to reporter Lisa Wade McCormick (ConsumerAffairs.com) the company voluntarily withdrew the puppy food after it had discovered pieces of melted plastic in the "production line of select varieties of NUTRO dry dog and cat food products." In May 2009 Nutro Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of their dry cat foods in the United States and ten additional countries due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier.
Veterinary "Prescription Diet Recalled
After a product sample of its canned cat food tested by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration indicated a low level of thiamine, or vitamin B1, Nestle Purina PetCare's Purina Veterinary Diets OM Overweight Management canned cat food with a "best by" date of June 2013 and the production code 11721159 has been recalled. The lot was distributed to veterinary clinics between June 2011 and May 2012 throughout the U.S. and Canada and was not sold in retail stores.
This recall was in response to one consumer complaint received by the FDA. Though the company said it has not received any other complaints of thiamine-related or other health issues related to the product, it acknowledged that cats fed this lot exclusively for several weeks may be at risk for developing a deficiency of thiamine, which is an essential vitamin for cats.
In my professional opinion this is unacceptable corporate irresponsibility, sending out product exclusively to veterinarians that has not been adequately formulated and tested for nutrient content, and in the process putting cats at risk, veterinarians" reputations, and I presume having the test done at tax payer"s expense.
