Dr. Michael W. Fox is a well-known veterinarian, former vice president of The Humane
Society of the United States, former vice president of Humane Society International
and the author of more than 40 adult and children’s books on animal care, animal
behavior and bioethics.
Dr. Fox is a renowned advocate of animal rights and a sharp and eloquent critic
of the biotechnology industry. As a professor, bioethicist and veterinarian, Dr.
Fox has spearheaded the movement to foster the ethical treatment of animals and
the environment since 1967. His advice to people who want to further this cause:
Start by learning more about what you put on the end of your fork.
“It’s not what comes out of our mouths that counts; it’s what we choose to put in
them…Support local farming cooperatives. Buy organically certified produce. Eat
lower on the food chain.”
In addition to writing and lecturing worldwide, Dr. Fox has appeared regularly in
popular media outlets including The Tonight Show and has spoken about animal behavior
and communication, bioethics and conscious food choices on National Public Radio,
The Today Show and National Geographic Society specials.
Born in England, Dr. Fox earned his veterinary degree at the Royal Veterinary College
in London, with honors in pathology and animal husbandry. In addition to his Bachelor
of Veterinary Medicine, he holds a Doctor of Science in Ethology/Animal Behavior,
and a PhD in Medicine from London University and is a member of the Royal College
of Veterinary Surgeons.
Dr. Fox is married to Deanna Krantz, who was the founder and director of the India
Project for Animals and Nature (IPAN), an organization that worked to promote the
ethical treatment of animals, protect the environment and improve the livelihood
for people in India. Dr. Fox served as chief consultant veterinarian for IPAN. They
are both dedicated to healing the rift between humans and the rest of Earth’s creation.
As Dr. Fox contends, “When we harm the Earth, we harm ourselves. When we demean
animals, we demean our humanity.”
Currently, he lives in Minneapolis MN with Deanna and two dogs: Batman, who
was rescued from the streets of India, and Lizzie, whom they adopted in Jamaica.
